We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
